the river Labe
The town Neratovice lies along the river Labe, approximately 20 kms north of Prague. The first written report comes from the year 1227. The settlement had been created from six original villages- Byskovice, Hornatky, Korycany, Lobkovice, Mlekojedy and Neratovice.
The small settlement started to grow in the second half of the 19th century when it got an important railway crossing. Industrial development came along with a traffic development. In the year 1898 Goldberg‘s factory for the producing of candles, oil and soap started working, in 1905 G. Sebor founded a chemicals factory. The biggest upsurge of the chemical industry came in the course of the II. World War and in a post-war period. The town development was connected with the development of today‘s Spolana. A need for the new workers resulted in the building of housing quarters, commercial, cultural and sports facilities. Neratovice got the town rights in July 1, 1960.
The town‘s building up has been continuing also after the year 1989. A town‘s hospital was built, a network of secondary schools was established (grammar school of F. Palacky , school of commerce, family and then statutory school), a roofed swimming pool with a new covered toboggan (91m) – the longest in the Czech Republic- was reconstructed, a network of shops and supermarkets was finished. The town has become a natural centre of the region.
One of the biggest personages of our history – politician, philosopher and historian Frantisek Palacky – is closely connected with Neratovice. He has spent most of his creative time at the Lobkovice castle. He was buried in Lobkovice cemetery on 31May, 1876. V. Halek stayed in Byskovice in his youth, B.Smetana carried out trips along the Labe river , the town is the birthplace of the actress and singer Ljuba Hermanova.
